The primary methods used to treat venous reflux disease are called endovenous laser ablation and radiofrequency venous ablation. The procedure entails the usage of a small laser fiber or radiofrequency catheter to close an unhealthy vein in order to reroute the blood flow to healthy veins. Each treatment method is a safe in-office procedure that takes about 45 minutes. Patients may return to normal activity wearing support stockings following the procedure. Endovenous Laser Ablation and Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation is a minimally invasive procedure in which the doctor inserts a laser fiber or RF catheter into the affected saphenous vein assisted by our vascular technologist using ultrasound guidance. Local anesthetic is dispersed around the vein using a pump, ensuring the patient’s comfort during the laser procedure. The laser or RF energy heats the lining within the vein, causing it to collapse, shrink, and eventually disappear. Patients also have the option of receiving IV sedation during their procedure given by a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA).
